Me gusta mucho esta canción de niños. Hace algunos años yo estaba en el restaurán "Latin Flava" - creo que está en la esquina de las calles 5 y Chew o Gordon - no estoy segura - en Allentown, Pennsylvania. No sé si todavía esta allí. El dueño era muy amable – él era de Puerto Rico, y su esposa de México.

Dije que queria aprender mas de canciones de ninos y canciones de cuna en espanol. Algunas familias vinieron y me cantaron esta cancion de los pollitos - me encantaba esta cancion!

Busque en el internet un "link" para oir esta cancion y otras. Encontre este link, de la Biblioteca del Estado de Texas. Tiene algunas canciones, con palabras y audio para escuchar.

Me gustaria saber mas sobre canciones y poemas para ninos. En ingles las poemas se llaman "nursery rhymes" y las canciones de cuna se llaman "lullabies." Me gustaria saber en cuales paises cantan estas canciones? De donde empezaron las canciones - en Espana, traidas aqui hace siglos, o son nuevas, creado en paises de America Latina?

This discussion is about children's songs and lullabies in Spanish. I like hearing them. Several years ago I went to "Latin Flava" restaurant in Allentown, and some children sang me a charming song "Los Pollitos." The song tells of baby chicks who say "Pio, Pio, Pio" when they are hungry or cold, and how the mother hen feeds them corn and wheat, and protects them under her wings. I found a web site (see link above) with words to children's songs, in Spanish and English, and audio clips.

I wonder about these songs... where did they originate - in a part of Latin America, or in Spain?

Borinquenfest Foto en Bethlehem

Esta foto (abajo) es de una pareja muy amable que conoci en el Borinquenfest en Bethlehem hace algunos anos. Estabamos en el "Museo" - una casa construida al estilo de las del campo en Puerto Rico. Cada ano del Borinquenfest se puede visitar esta casa.

Borinquenfest es una fiesta que se celebra durante el verano en Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. No estoy segura, pero creo que la palabra "Borinque" es el nombre de los indigenos que habitaron la isla antes de la llegada de los europos.

Cada ano hay un tema diferente en las exhibiciones del museo. En este ano era una celebracion de las varias fiestas folkloricas en Puerto Rico. Javier Toro y su esposa tenian cargo del museo este ano. Todos los voluntarios eran muy amable.

El mapa en la foto muestra las divisiones geograficas de Puerto Rico - no recuerdo como se llaman - municipios? La gente me ensenaron mucho sobre las varias regiones de Puerto Rico, y marcaron sus pueblos de origen con estrellitas en el mapa.

English translation:
Every year at the Borinquenfest in Bethlehem - a festival celebrating Puerto Rican culture - a little "country house" is constructed. Inside there is museum of culture, and each year the exhibits focus on a different theme of folklore. The year of this photo there was an exhibit of the festivals that are celebrated in the different villages.
This very nice couple agreed to let me take their picture as they stand in front of a map of Puerto Rico. Visitors marked the place of their families' heritage on the map with stars. I learned a lot about the unique geography and traditions of each region.

Latino Leadership Alliance of the Lehigh Valley

I have been a member of the Latino Leadership Alliance of the Lehigh Valley for ten years. I enjoy the meetings - I get energy from them, meet interesting people and learn more about my community.

A member of the organization hosted a wonderful dinner meeting in July. I got to see old friends and make new ones, and enjoy some delicious homemade Latino dishes. We discussed the coordination of publicity about various projects of the committees, such as education and health.

At our gatherings I meet people from many different countries and cultures. After the meeting, some of us reminisced about our childhoods, and how the culture and geography of our families influenced our outlooks on life. We recalled sad times and happy times, but the stories were always interesting.

As far as my family history, most of my ancestors came mostly from Germany. I'm sad about the fact that I didn't get the opportunity to learn German from them - all I heard was English when I was growing up. I'm now starting to study German and to learn more about my family's history.

In this country, there has always been pressure on immigrants to learn English, be "American" and forego use of our ancestral languages. I believe that you can learn English just as well, or better, if you continue speaking your family's original language and appreciating the cultural traditions.

When I was a child, I found a little book that had Spanish words in it, with little cartoon pictures showing the meanings. I was fascinated with the book... I didn't know anything about Spanish. I probably had never been exposed to any languages other than English. Somehow this little book seemed magical to me - like a secret code.

When I got to high school, I studied Spanish, loved my teachers and the classes. I studied it in college, and went to Spain to study at the College of Political Science and Economics at the University of Madrid for two semesters.

This was a long time ago, but over the years I've gotten to know people from all over Latin America, as well as Latinos who grew up in the US. These friends have told me such wonderful stories, always with such deep feeling... I enjoy speaking Spanish, and I've grown to love the food, music and culture.

The study of geography is very interesting, and I've learned a lot about world culture and languages from people who have brought stories from other places and times. I have some other blogs that tell stories about these topics.

The Latino Leadership Alliance of the Lehigh Valley has a special place in my heart. Meetings and membership are open to anyone. Monthly meetings usually take place at the Lehigh County Government Center at 8:30 a.m. on the third Tuesday of every month, except July and August. The Government Center is located at 17 S. 7th Street in Allentown.

For further information, see the organizations web site at www.llalv.org. Meetings are conducted in English, and there is no charge to attend. The organization also holds meetings and activities of various committees, and several special events each year.

¡Bienvenido al Blog "Historias de Pennsylvania"!

En este espacio podemos poner noticias e historias sobre la cultura hispanica. En el Lehigh Valley, que esta en la parte este del estado de Pennsylvania, EE. UU, viven muchos latinos. Me han contado historias bonitas de la naturaleza y costumbres de varias partes del mundo.

Me gustaria aprender mas sobre el idioma y la cultura de la los paises donde la gente habla espanol, porque soy estudiante de este idioma. ¡Espero que los lectores pueden entender lo que escribo, a pesar de las equivocaciones!

Muchas personas que vienen a Pennsylvania traen historias de otras partes... hablan de la musica y los cuentos folkloricos, la naturaleza, el paisaje, plantas y animales, las comidas, los artes, la literatura, y mucho mas.

Para mi, es muy triste cuando a los ninos en las familias latinas se les olvide el espanol. Es posible aprender el ingles sin olvidar la hermosura del espanol.

El lenguaje tiene variaciones en los paises en que hablan espanol. ¿Como desarrollaron estas diferencias? Los dialectos tienen influencia de los idiomas indigenas, y de la region de origen de espana de los conquistadores. Seria interesante aprender mas sobre ese asunto tambien.
